Problems In Food Production
What is to eat will be the big question faced by billions of people in 2050. The crop failures due to droughts, floods and diseases are reducing the availability food. People all over the world are concerned about the sources of food. The growing population makes the scenario even worse. Agricultural industries are already facing great pressure to meet the demands of the market. Agricultural experts are trying to make farming sustainable. The history of mankind shows how the unscrupulous use of resources caused the failure of agricultural revolutions. About 11, 000 years ago the Middle East area had huge cultivation of wheat due to the irrigation facility. The practice of mono-crop and over dependency for water to survive caused desertification and the civilization failed.

The Future Problems
The problems faced by the today’s agricultural area are different

  • The land available for agriculture is decreasing as a result of urbanization
  • The population in cities will overwhelm the housing and sanitation systems
  • Water availability will decrease for agricultural needs
  • Food and clean drinking water will become scarce

To avoid such catastrophic conditions most of the countries have started reviving agricultural practices according to the present need of the population.

The Possible Solution
There are agricultural projects suitable for cities like greenhouses, rooftop gardens, hydroponic farming, vertical farming etc. So, it is possible to grow food in the city using abandoned warehouses, empty lands etc. it has been found that roof top green houses are able to provide better yield than the outdoor farms. U.S already has large–scale indoor farms in Arizona and Illinois. These farms contain hydroponic green houses and areas which produce leafy green vegetables, tilapia fish and many other agricultural products. It has been found that due to the current level of pollution it is better to have indoor farms than the outdoor farms. With the advancement in technology the Controlled Environment Agriculture offers a bright future for agriculture. Indoor farming can be carried out with more efficiency using latest strategies. For example the grow light which is evolved from fluorescent light fixtures are adapted to give lights of wavelength 680nm and 460nm which are necessary for growing plants. These LED grow lights helps to produce better yield by commercial crops. These LED lights will reduce the energy costs for crop production.

Vertical Farming
The current vertical farming mainly concentrates on cash crops like leafy vegetables, it is expected that in the future there will be a demand for other vegetables and fruits grown without using harmful pesticides. This will cause the need to do vertical farming in more productive way in tall buildings, instead of using the single storey buildings. United States is planning new vertical farms in Memphis, Milwaukee, Wyoming etc. it is expected that the urban agriculture has the potential to meet 50 % of the food needed by the year 2050. Growing food using vertical indoor farms and using new economical lighting systems will be the key to achieve food sustainability in the future. These practices will help to overcome the ill effects of crop failures to a certain extent.
